This page is not about playing better. It is about the point at which gambling stops being something you chose and starts being something you do, and about the tools (all free, most of them legally required) that exist for exactly that moment. We do not run a casino, we take no deposits and nothing on this page is an offer.
What Responsible Gambling Means
Gambling is entertainment you pay for. Over time the house keeps a share of everything staked; that is how the product works, and no strategy, system or bonus changes it. Treated as entertainment, the money is the price of the evening. Treated as income, or as a way back from a loss, it stops working almost immediately.
Three habits carry most of the weight:
- Decide the money before you start. An amount you would be content to lose, set as a deposit limit, not held in your head.
- Never chase a loss. Staking more to win back what has gone is the single behaviour that turns a bad session into a bad year.
- Keep it time-boxed. Gambling that fills empty hours, or that you reach for when something else has gone wrong, has already changed function.
How to Tell It Has Stopped Being Fun
Nobody notices the day it changes. These are the markers clinicians and the National Gambling Helpline ask about, and they are worth answering honestly:
- You have gambled more, or for longer, than you meant to, more than once.
- You have gone back to win money back after losing.
- You have borrowed, sold something, or used money meant for something else in order to gamble.
- You have lied about how much you gamble, or hidden it.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
- Gambling is affecting work, sleep, study or the people around you.
- You gamble to escape worry, low mood or boredom.
One of these is worth watching. Several is worth acting on today, and acting on it is free.
The Tools Every UK Casino Must Give You
Every operator licensed by the Gambling Commission has to offer these, in your account, without asking anyone’s permission.
- Deposit limits: daily, weekly or monthly. Lowering one takes effect immediately; raising one is deliberately slow.
- Loss and stake limits: a ceiling on what a session can cost, not on what goes in.
- Reality checks: an on-screen reminder at an interval you choose, showing how long you have played and what it has cost.
- Time-out: a short cooling-off period, from a day to several weeks, during which you cannot deposit or play.
- Self-exclusion: a longer, binding block on that one account.
- Account closure: on request, with your balance returned.
Separately from the limits you set, every UK-licensed casino caps online slot stakes at £5 a spin, or £2 a spin if you are 18 to 24. The cap has applied since 2025 and you cannot raise it.
Two things a licensed operator may not do: accept a credit card, banned for all gambling in Great Britain since April 2020, including a credit card sitting behind a wallet; or let you open an account before you are 18 and verified.
Self-Exclusion: GamStop
GamStop is the national scheme. Registering once blocks you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain (not one operator, all of them), and every operator we list is required to honour it. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and you choose a minimum period of six months, one year or five years. It cannot be lifted early.
GamStop covers online gambling licensed in Great Britain. It does not cover unlicensed offshore sites, which is one of several reasons this site lists licensed operators only. For land-based venues, ask at the venue or use the scheme its trade body runs.
Two things worth doing alongside it:
- Blocking software. BetBlocker is free and blocks gambling sites at device level, including sites GamStop cannot reach. Useful on a family computer as well as your own.
- A bank block. Most UK banks will switch off gambling transactions on your card, usually in the app, and many apply a delay before it can be switched back on.
Where to Get Help, Free and Independent of Us
None of the services below is run by a gambling company, and none of them costs anything.
- National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, every day. Run by GamCare, who also offer live chat and free treatment.
- GambleAware: advice, a self-assessment you can take in a few minutes, and a directory of free treatment near you.
- GamCare: counselling and structured support, in person and online.
- Gordon Moody: residential and intensive treatment for severe gambling harm.
- NHS gambling services: the NHS runs specialist gambling clinics across England; a GP can refer you, and several clinics take self-referrals.
If the damage is financial as much as anything else, StepChange and Citizens Advice give free debt advice and will not judge how the debt arrived.
If Someone Else Is Affected
The helpline above is for people affected by someone else’s gambling as well as for gamblers, and most callers in that position have never spoken to anyone about it. Practical steps that help: keep your own money separate, do not clear the debt without advice, and do not make the conversation conditional on them stopping. GamCare runs support specifically for family members.
Keeping Under-18s Away From It
Eighteen is the legal age for all gambling covered on this site, and every operator we list must verify age and identity before a first deposit. On a shared device, blocking software is the reliable layer: BetBlocker is free and covers the whole device, and both iOS and Android allow content restrictions on a child’s account. If a child has used an adult’s account, tell the operator. They are obliged to act, and stakes placed by a child are returnable.
What We Do, and What We Do Not Do
We are a comparison site. We do not operate games, hold funds or take bets. We are paid commission by the operators we list when a reader opens an account through one of our links, which is disclosed at the top of every page and in the footer, and it does not change the terms you get.
What that pays for, and what it does not buy:
- Every operator we list holds a current Gambling Commission licence, checked on the public register. You can check any of them yourself in under a minute.
- We do not list an offer whose wagering requirement is above 10x, the British maximum.
- We do not use language that suggests gambling is a way to make money, that any outcome is guaranteed, or that any offer is free of risk.
- We do not carry credit-card or cryptocurrency deposit methods. Credit cards are banned for gambling in Great Britain; cryptocurrency is not banned, but no UK-licensed casino we list accepts it.
- A commission arrangement has never moved an operator up our table. The scoring is published on each review.
If you think something on this site falls short of that, tell us through our contact page and name the page.
